“Research into the benefits of motorbiking to mental health”
A neurobiological study conducted by UCLA researchers has yielded pioneering scientific evidence to support the claim that motorcycling is beneficial for positive mental health. Researchers found that motorcycling increased metrics of focus and attention, and decreased relative levels of cortisol, a hormonal marker of stress. While riding a motorcycle, participants also experienced increased sensory focus and resilience to distraction. Riding also produced an increase in adrenaline levels and heart rate, as well as a decrease in cortisol metrics – results often associated with light exercise and stress-reduction.
Additional benefits include:
- Signposting to other groups that can provide support and be supported by individuals using WWMP.
- Skills sharing.
- Environmental benefits of reduction in number of scrapped vehicles and recycling of vehicles used for ‘spares or repair’.
- Social and support network development which reduces the need for statutory services.

The third link is to a scientific research paper published by Ryuta Kawashima and others in 2014. You may not want to read it all as it goes into huge depth, but it does demonstrate the thoroughness with which the research was done. So that fact that getting out on your bike puts you in a good frame of mind and a good place mentally has been SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN.
